Judy Appel, JD, MCP, is the Senior Program Officer of the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation.
She also serves as a second term Trustee on the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education, having first been elected in 2012 and is currently a candidate for CA State Assembly (AD15). Judy’s expertise spans educational policy, legal and legislative advocacy, restorative practices and positive school climate, criminal justice reform, affordable housing, LGBTQ civil rights and family systems. Prior to joining the foundation, Judy served as the Executive Director of the California School-Based Health Alliance (CSHA), which aims to improve the health and academic success of the state’s children and youth by advancing health services in public schools. Before that, Judy served for over a decade as the Executive Director of Our Family Coalition, which advances equity for LGBTQ families with children through support, education, and advocacy. She has also worked in the Office of Legal Affairs for the national Drug Policy Alliance, where she advanced a public health approach to our national drug policies, and as a staff attorney for the San Francisco-based Coalition on Homelessness. Judy is a founding member of the CA LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights Board of Directors, and has served on dozens of boards and advisory bodies. Judy lives in Berkeley with her wife and is the proud mom of two teens and person to three dogs and two cats.
