Firelight Media founders Marcia Smith and Stanley Nelson believe that documentary storytelling is among the most powerful tools for artistic expression and advancing social justice. BIPOC filmmakers in particular struggle to find artistic and financial resources in the broader documentary field. Firelight Media supports the creation, distribution and impact of documentary media by and about communities of color.
The Jonathan Logan Family Foundation has supported Firelight’s William Greaves Research and Development Fund since 2020. Named for filmmaking pioneer William Greaves, the fund provides resources to mid-career nonfiction storytellers from underrepresented communities. Firelight’s support of mid-career filmmakers is unique and is key to the development of talented storytellers.
