A Double Life tells the story of Stephen Bingham, a lawyer accused of passing a gun to prisoners’ rights leader George Jackson at San Quentin State Prison in 1971. Three guards and two inmates were killed in an alleged break-out attempt, and Jackson was shot dead. Bingham was the last outside visitor to see Jackson on the day the violence erupted. He was indicted on five counts of first-degree murder for allegedly passing a gun to Jackson during the visit. The FBI was determined to crack down on radical lawyers, who, according to J. Edgar Hoover, were “more dangerous than the people who throw bombs.” They launched a major manhunt. Forced into a life on the run, Bingham spent 13 years underground, eluding capture while determined to clear his name.
Director Catherine Masud follows Bingham’s journey and explores a turbulent era in American history. A Double Life had its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 8, 2023, where it won an Audience Favorite Award. Check out the trailer below and visit here to learn more.
