Chicken & Egg Pictures

C hicken & Egg Pictures works towards an inclusive media industry in which women and gender nonconforming filmmakers, representing a range of experiences and backgrounds, are fully supported to realize their artistic goals and build fulfilling careers in the documentary film industry. Since 2005, Chicken & Egg has awarded $9 million in grants to over 400 filmmakers at various stages in their careers.

  • The Chicken & Egg Award supports experienced filmmakers with unrestricted funds, recognizing the roadblocks that often prevent talented storytellers from working full-time as independent filmmakers.
  • Through Docs by the Dozen, Chicken & Egg commissions short documentaries and provides filmmakers with the opportunity to expand their portfolios.
  • Participants in Project: Hatched receive professional support and finishing funds to launch their films.
  • The (Egg)celerator Lab supports first-and-second-time filmmakers working on feature-length nonfiction films. In addition to grants, Chicken & Egg provides creative mentorship and professional networking opportunities.
  • Previous grantees graduate to the AlumNest, where they can build community and continue to develop their careers.

Chicken & Egg’s vision for the documentary film industry aligns with the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation’s focus on social justice, and we are proud to provide them with general operating support. Films supported by Chicken & Egg have won numerous awards, including Academy and Emmy Awards. Their films include the 2022 Oscar-nominated Writing With Fire by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, Mama Bears by Daresha Kyi, Belly of the Beast by Erika Cohn and Storm Lake by Beth Levison and Jerry Risius, to name just a few.
