International Consortium of Investigative Journalists

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists holds the powerful accountable with its groundbreaking investigations. Drawing on the expertise and reach of a broad network of reporters and media organizations, ICIJ empowers readers to engage with their local communities about issues of global importance. In February 2021, ICIJ was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for contributions to increased transparency in the global financial system. With support from the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, ICIJ has updated its suite of technology tools, expanded its global network of journalists, built up its operations team and broadened its base of funders. In June 2021, ICIJ was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for their investigations into international money laundering. JLFF is proud to support ICIJ’s far-reaching and impactful reporting.

ICIJ has released dozens of investigations over the years, including:

The Panama Papers – a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into global corruption at the highest political levels. The Panama Papers sparked investigations in more than 82 countries, resulted in the resignation of political figures in Mongolia, Iceland, Pakistan, Spain and elsewhere, and lead many countries to strengthen laws against tax evasion and money laundering. ICIJ made their database regarding the Panama Papers available as a resource for journalists and investigators around the world.

The Implant Files – an investigation into how health authorities around the world have failed to protect millions of patients from poorly-tested medical implants. ICIJ conducted hundreds of interviews with patients who suffered complications from flawed devices. To make the results of their reporting accessible, ICIJ built the International Medical Devices Database, where anyone can research the safety history of their devices.

The FinCEN Files – a global investigation exposing how the world’s biggest banks move trillions of dollars of dirty money, enriching themselves and their shareholders while governments fail to stop them. ICIJ partnered with and coordinated a team of more than 400 journalists from 88 countries in order to track these suspicious transactions and reveal the human cost.

Pandora Papers – an unprecedented leak exposing the offshore havens and hidden riches of world leaders and billionaires. The latest major investigation from ICIJ, the Pandora Papers reveal the inner workings of a shadow economy that benefits the wealthy and well-connected at the expense of everyone else.
