In The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane, American history gets a shakeup through the story of Barbara Dane, a Bay Area-based blues/jazz/folk singer, activist, feminist, record producer and committed troublemaker. The documentary film explores narratives around 1940s Communisim, 1950s white femininity, the joy and politics of the 1960s folk scene, the 1970s GI Anti-War movement and the 1980s Iran-Contra affair. Director Maureen Gosling follows Dane’s nine-decade journey as her unbending principles guide her through notoriety, obscurity and music legend, all while accumulating a hefty FBI file.
The film had its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 10, 2023. Check out the trailer below and visit here to learn more.
