Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth to Power is a documentary film directed and produced by Abby Ginzberg that explores the life and career of Representative Barbara Lee, a steadfast voice for human rights, peace and diplomacy in the U.S. Congress. The Jonathan Logan Family Foundation believes that Barbara Lee’s story will remind audiences how much principled and diverse voices like hers need to be heard.
Barbara Lee cut her teeth as a volunteer for the Black Panther Party and was the lone voice in opposition to the broad authorization of military force after the September 11th attacks. In 2001, she issued a strong warning in the House of Representatives: “Let us not become the evil we deplore.” Abby Ginzberg’s unique access to a sitting member of Congress allows the film not only to introduce the public to Barbara Lee, but to many others such as Rep. John Lewis, Senator Cory Booker, Rep. James Clyburn, and Republican Rep. Walter Jones. The vantage points of these elected representatives make it clear that concerns about threats to our democracy cross party lines. The film is available to stream on Amazon, iTunes and Starz. In February 2022, Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth to Power received an NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Documentary category. Check out the trailer below.
